According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. Today there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is beneficial to the cancer patient before and after surgery. An initial evaluation determines baseline shoulder function, circumferential limb measures, posture and flexibility, and fitness/activity level. The physical therapist monitors participation in a supervised and progressive exercise program, allowing the woman to take an active role in her physical recovery. A therapist's goal is to accelerate healing and improve functional use of the arm and return to function in every aspect of life.

September is

Healthy Aging Month
Healthy aging month is putting the focus on the positive side of growing older. Each year, approximately 21,880 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Many women do not seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93%. Cancer begins at a cellular level. Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells. These new cells take the place of old cells as they die. Cancer cells continue to grow and divide. These abnormal cells continue to create new cells forming a tumor. Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinoma, cancer that begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary or malignant germ cell tumors, cancer that begins in egg cells.

During chemotherapy doctors may recommend physical therapy as well. The physical therapist's role is to promote and maintain functional mobility and tolerance for activity in the patient with cancer during various stages of treatment and recovery. Physical Therapy can help with pain, strengthening muscles that are weak, improve mobility, and restore your physical function/performance or everyday activities. Exercises include range of motion, stretching, and manual therapy.

August is..

National Immunization Awareness Month

National Immunization Awareness Month is the perfect time to promote immunizations to family, friends, and co workers to get caught up on their shots. Physical therapy helps to relieve pain, promote healing, and restore function and movement.

July is

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month

Juvenile Arthritis refers to any form of arthritis or arthritis related condition that develops in the children or teenagers who are younger than 18 years old. Your physical therapist may also teach you new ways to safely handle your "daily activities."

May is American Stroke Month

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries and within the brain. It is the No.3 leading cause of death in the United States, behind diseases of heart and cancer.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.

There are 2 different types of stroke:
Ischemic Stroke accounts for about 87% of all cases, they occur as a result of an obstruction within the blood vessel supplying blood to the brain. This is because of a development of fatty deposits lining the vessel walls.
Hemorrhagic Stroke accounts for about 13% of stroke cases, they occur as a result of a weakened vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue

Physical Therapy Physical therapists specialize in treating disabilities related to motor sensory impairments. They are trained in all aspects of anatomy and physiology related to normal function, with an emphasis on movement. They assess the stroke survivor's strength, endurance, range of motion, gait abnormalities, and sensory deficits to design individualized rehabilitation programs aimed at regaining control over motor functions. Therapists help survivors regain the use of stroke-impaired limbs, teach compensatory strategies to reduce the effect of remaining deficits, and establish ongoing exercise programs to help people retain their newly learned skills.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month

What is Arthritis? Arthritis literally means joint inflammation. But the term is often used to refer to any of the more than 100 diseases that affect the joints- where two or more bones meet to allow movement. One in five Americans is living with the pain of Arthritis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projects that by the year 2030, an estimated 67 million people in the U.S. will be affected by arthritis, up from the current estimates of 46 million.

Physical Therapy The goal of physical therapy is to get a person back to the point when he or she can perform normal, everyday activities without difficulty. Preserving good range of motion is key to maintain the ability to perform daily activities. Therefore, increasing the range of motion of a joint is the primary focus of physical therapy. Building strength in the involved muscles surrounding the joint is also extremely important, since stronger muscles can better stabilize a weakened joint. Physical therapists provide exercises designed to preserve the strength and use of your joints. They can show you the best way to move from one position to another.

National Public Health Week

April 6-12 is National Public Health Week

Public Health is the science and the art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education and the promotion of healthy life styles. In the United State alone, within the elder population, the number of persons afflicted with lymphedema, or at risk of developing it, exceeds 6.8 million individuals.Lymphedema is a notoriously debilitating progressive condition with no known cure. The unfortunate patient faces a lifelong struggle of medical, and sometimes surgical, treatment fraught with potentially lethal complications.

While there is no cure for lymphedema, the condition can be managed through a combination of early detection, clinical treatment, education, and home management. In the early stages of lymphedema, when very mild swelling is present, the condition is managed by compression garment wear, exercise, and elevation. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about every one minute one will die from one.

The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack are crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or stroke in the future.

Physical Therapy

A better choice for pain treatment, according to Americas Heart's statement, is physical therapy, exercise, weightloss, and heat and cold therapy. It is better to be conservative by using physical therapy and other pain relieving methods first to avoid potential risk to the heart that may be associated with certain medications. Another reason patients with heart disease may benefit from physical therapy is that staying active is key to a healthy heart. Physical therapy is a good way to maintain or improve mobility. With a hands-on exam, diagnosis, and treatment, physical therapists can treat many kinds of pain and imflammation in patients of all ages, give fitness advice, and assistance to promote overall wellness.

Cervical Health Awareness Month

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Cervical Health Awareness Month was created to raise awareness about the prevention of Cervical Cancer. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress isn't always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you're constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price.

Understanding Stress
Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger, the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the "fight-or-flight" reaction, or the stress response. The stress response is the body's way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert.

Physical Therapy
There are many different types a stress, one being physical stress. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. Many people with lymphedema are labeled over-weight, yet lymphedema is not about fat storage. Here at our office we provide lymphedema management of non invasive, painless, and effective procedures. Different conditions can cause experiences of many types and intensities of pain, which can be relieved by treatments such as laser therapy.
September offers an opportunity to share information on pain with family, friends and members of our community: it is Pain Awareness Month.

Laser therapy is scientifically proven to dramatically reduce pain associated with arthritis, back & muscle pain, tendonitis, fractures, fibromyalgia, and more! It achieves:
· Faster wound healing
· Anti-inflammation
· Tissue repair and cell growth
· Improved vascular and metabolic activity
· Improved nerve function

We can apply this treatment over fractures, pins, and plates—even wounds are shown to heal faster with laser therapy. It is safe on children as well.

Do you, a family member, or friend suffer from Lymphedema?

We can help you live a more active lifestyle!

What: Please join us for a free 30 minute informational class about Lymphedema

When: Wed. September 16, 2009 at 6:00pm

Where: 4028 E. The disease develops when malignant cells form in the tissue covering the ovary.

Risk Factors
· A family history of ovarian cancer or a personal history of cancer
· 55 years of age or older
· Menopausal hormone therapy

Symptoms
· Ongoing bloating
· Pelvic or abdominal pain
· Changes in eating habits
· Frequent or urgent urination

Treatment
· Surgery confirms and treats cancer by removing cancerous tissue. If the stage is advanced and the woman does not want children, the surgery may include a total hysterectomy or a salpingo-oophorectomy, which removes the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
· Chemotherapy is recommended after surgery, and can last for 4 to 6 months. It can be taken through the mouth to enter the bloodstream to reach cancer cells throughout the body, or be placed directly in the organ to affect the cancer cells in that area.

Any woman who has a high risk factor, or has experienced the above symptoms for a week or more should talk to her doctor.

Yoga Awareness Month

September 2009
The practice of yoga can improve both physical and mental health.

What is Physical Therapy?

It's an important question, and the answer will help you understand how a physical therapist can improve your ability to move and function, while also benefiting your general fitness and health.
Physical therapists are experts in "the science of healing and the art of caring." This is what that means:

The Science of Healing

Patients and physicians are demanding the talents of physical therapists for conservative management of a wide variety of conditions. In many cases, patients are being sent to physical therapy instead of surgery.

Physical therapists help people with orthopedic conditions such as low back pain or osteoporosis; joint and soft tissue injuries such as fractures and dislocations; neurologic conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Parkinson's disease (PD or Multiple Sclerosis (MS); connective tissue injuries such as burns or wounds; cardiopulmonary and circulatory conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); Chronic swelling of a limb (Lymphedema) due to mastectomy, CHF, genetics; and workplace injuries including repetitive stress disorders and sports injuries.

The Art of Caring

The individualized, "hands on" approach that characterizes physical therapist care is highly valued by patients. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the first time, he or she examines that individual and develops a plan of care that promotes the ability to move, reduces pain, restores function, prevents disability and by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. The physical therapist and the patient then work side-by-side to make sure that the goals of the treatment plan are met.
Therapeutic exercise and functional training are the cornerstones of physical therapist treatment. Depending on the particular needs of a patient, physical therapists may "mobilize" a joint (that is, perform certain types of passive movements at the end of the patient's range of motion) or massage a muscle to promote proper movement and function. Physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, ultrasound (high-frequency waves that produce heat), hot packs, ice, and Low light laser therapy in addition to other treatments when appropriate.

Physical therapists practice in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes.

In-Home Physical Therapy allows patients to render services in the comfort of their own home rather than residential, long-term, or institutional-based nursing care. Home services include; Fall Prevention Program; A Home Safety Evaluation; Individualized Programs Increasing Endurance, Flexibility, and Strengthening; as well as Rehabilitation and Functional Training to improve one’s ability to perform daily physical actions, tasks or activities. These programs are specially designed for geriatric patients who may find it difficult to access services outside their home. We provide important interaction and stimulation in a comfortable and caring environment. All necessary tools are provided by the Physical Therapist and brought to each scheduled appointment.

Most people can benefit from physical therapy, whether their condition varies from a simple ankle sprain to a complex neurological disorder. Physical therapy uses non-invasive and non-medical tools to help improve total body function. Physical therapists focus on relieving pain, promoting healing, restoring function and movement, and facilitation and adaptation associated with injury. Therapy also focuses on ergonomics or body mechanic training, fitness, and wellness.
