National Headache Awareness Week

June is

National Headache Awareness Week

Headaches can be caused by reduced blood flow to various areas of the cerebral cortex, muscular strains in the head or neck, or the most common emotional stress.

The best solution for headaches is prevention. Prevention is safer, more convenient, and more beneficial to overall health. Lifetime modifications that may help include:

  • Adequate hydration by drinking at least six eight ounce glasses of water every day and limiting the amount of caffeine.
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid a drop in blood sugar by not skipping meals.
  • Get regular exercise and maintain good posture while sitting at work.
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule and go to bed and wake up at the same time.

Headache causing foods are aged cheese, alcohol, nitrates, artificial sweetners, cold foods, and caffeine.

When the onset of the headache becomes disabling or recurrent, it may be good reason to seek medical attention.
